Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (92.3 The Fan) – With their playoff hopes on life support, the Browns can at least breathe easy knowing quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t suffer a serious injury in Sunday’s 20-13 loss.

X-rays taken at halftime were negative on Mayfield’s right hand according to the quarterback.

“That’s the good news,” Mayfield, who didn’t say if he will undergo an MRI Monday, said. “It got a little numb, took some medicine and went back out there so we’ll see.”

The Browns quarterback had his hand wrapped tightly in ice after the game as he fielded questions from reporters, and he left Heinz Field with it still wrapped.

“It hit the facemask obviously with a little bit of speed and force trying to throw the long ball,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield suffered the injury with 16 seconds remaining in the first half when he hit his right hand on the helmet and facemask of Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree on his follow through of a deep ball to Odell Beckham Jr.

After the heave on second down to Beckham fell incomplete, Mayfield went straight to the Browns sideline and summoned trainers.

“Just a contusion,” head coach Freddie Kitchens said.

Mayfield plans to suit up next Sunday against Cincinnati.

“I fully expect to be able to play,” Mayfield said.

Seconds later he ran to the locker room while backup Garrett Gilbert took over. Gilbert threw a pair of incompletions that killed the remaining seconds with the game tied at 10.

Mayfield completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in the first half and returned to play the entire second half, but with a glove on.

Both Kitchens and Mayfield maintain the glove did not adversely affect Mayfield’s ability to throw the ball in the second half.

“It didn’t at all,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield finished the afternoon with 196 yards on 18 of 32 passing with a touchdown and interception, which came with less than two minutes to play and sealed the victory for the Steelers.
