CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Indians are going to promote outfielder Oscar Mercado from Triple-A Columbus according to Mandy Bell of MLB.com. He will join the team in Chicago, but isn't in Monday's starting lineup.

Mercado, 24, posted a .294/.396/.496 slash line in 30 games for the Clippers this season. He has 24 stolen bases this season. He can play all three outfield positions, but primarily plays center field. His speed gives the Indians a dynamic they don't currently have in their lineup.

The news surfaced just minutes after Terry Francona said Tyler Naquin wasn't ready to play on Monday due to a calf injury that he suffered in Oakland. The Indians could place Naquin on the injured list to make room for Mercado.

Naquin's injury gives the Indians time to evaluate Mercado without releasing one of their outfielders.

Cleveland acquired Mercado from St. Louis at the trade deadline last season in exchange for Conner Capel and Jhon Torres.
